A balance sheet presents assets and capital positions at a reporting date. It forms part of annual accounts rather than showing a live bank balance.
Meaning and context
Assets include categories such as fixed and current assets. The other side includes equity, provisions and liabilities. The HGB prescribes a corporate layout, with abridgement available under statutory conditions.
What the documents show
Total assets are neither revenue nor profit. Registered nominal capital is a particular capital figure, not the same as total accounting equity. Individual figures require the context of the other positions.
Research tip
Compare several financial years where possible and read available notes. A published balance sheet alone cannot establish present liquidity or future performance with certainty.
