Final authentication is an additional authentication that may be required for certain German public documents before consular legalisation. It is neither an apostille nor legalisation itself.
Prior authentication
Before final authentication by the Federal Agency for Foreign Affairs (BfAA), the competent authority must authenticate the document. The BfAA identifies the regional court (Landgericht) for prior authentication of judicial and notarial documents, including commercial register extracts. Confirm competence for the specific document.
Check destination and document type
The requirement depends on the procedure and the foreign representation’s requirements. Country lists and exceptions can change. A country listing does not establish a universal requirement for all document types.
What it does not replace
Final authentication does not replace any subsequent consular legalisation, translation or separate recipient review. Confirm the entire sequence before ordering and allow time for each processing step.
